THE Worcester Christmas Victorian Fayre gets underway tonight (Thursday) with its usual curtain call, the opening ceremony and procession through the faithful city.

Gathering at the Guildhall the procession will depart at 5.15pm being led by the mayor.

Joining the traditional Victorian galloper in the Cornmarket, Worcester Mayor councillor Alan Amos will declare the fayre officially open at around 5.30pm.

Rounding off the opening ceremony, crowds will be treated to special performances from the Salvation Army and Worcester Cathedral Voluntary Choir – both back by popular demand after last year.

But that is not all the first day of the Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre has to offer.

Musical performances, ranging from acoustic bands to clarinet, saxophone and vocal group performances, will be dotted around the four entertainment zones for the entire day, providing the perfect soundtrack to leisurely Christmas shopping afternoons in Worcester’s historic streets.

For those wishing to soak up a musical special for the entire day, and maybe sample a few local ales in the process, the Cardinals Hat, Worcester’s oldest pub, will have an outdoor stage, with a full calendar of live music from 12pm onwards.

Finally, there will be a special vintage treat at the Old Vinegar Works in St. Martin’s Quarter, with favourites from last years fayre returning to honour the heritage and history of works.

In addition, more than 150 stalls will be opening up for the first time, filled to the brim with a range of souvenirs, gifts and produce, of both local and international flavours, offering no lack of inspiration for those looking to take care of their Christmas shopping nice and early.

Helen Mole, head of events at the Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be running the Christmas Fayre again this year. This year is going to be bigger and better than ever, with more stalls and more entertainment than ever before.

"Today is only the start of the fun. There is so much to do and see over the course of the weekend."

Tonight (Thursday) is also late night shopping in Worcester town centre, with local shops keeping their doors open so people can pop in whilst roaming the streets and embracing the Victorian Fayre atmosphere.
