A SCHOOL in Droitwich which was partially closed yesterday after asbestos was found in the building will remain closed to year nine pupils today.

Parents of pupils at Droitwich Spa High School were sent a letter last Friday telling them ‘background’ asbestos had been discovered in the main classroom block.

The school is open as normal for years eight, 11, 12 and 13 and some mock exams for year 10 students have been re-arranged, although pupils are being asked to come to school as normal.

A statement from headteacher Natalie Waters on the school’s website said: “It is highly likely that some parts of the school will remain closed for at least the remainder of this week whilst the source of the ‘background asbestos’ is identified.

“Therefore, it is likely that at least one year group will need to stay at home on each day.

“I understand that arranging child care at short notice is difficult so I will endeavour to give as much notice as possible whilst prioritising the needs of our students who are nearest their external examinations.

“As soon as I get a response from the Education Funding Agency and/or our insurers about the provision of temporary accommodation I will be in a better position to give you more information about arrangements for the coming days.”
