A WORCESTER man will carry out 40 hours of unpaid work after admitting stealing lager from a petrol station.

Jamie Ward, of Hollymount Road, Tolladine, appeared at Worcester Magistrates’ Court on May 1, where he admitted stealing cans of lager worth £4.95 from the Texaco Garage in Tolladine Road.

Prosecutor Owen Beale said the 22-year-old had gone into the shop at about 9pm on Sunday, March 8, and picked up a pack of lager and taken it to the till. Although the card he tried to pay with was declined, Ward — who was said to be “clearly intoxicated” — walked out of the shop with the cans of lager.

Mr Beale said an employee had chased Ward and tried to tell him he had not paid, but retreated when his friends arrived.

He was handed a six-month community order and ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work.

Ward was also ordered to pay £4.95 compensation, £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
