NHS England is reminding people to factor in a visit to the pharmacy as part of their summer holiday plans.
According to the NHS, travellers’ diarrhoea is the most common health problem to affect travellers abroad.
Local pharmacies can help with providing diarrhoea tablets and basic first aid kits.
Dr Kiran Patel, medical director for NHS England in the West Midlands, said: “Talk to your local pharmacist if you are on medication for a long term condition, such as asthma, diabetes or a heart condition to find out if you need a repeat prescription to take with you.
“Also put together a basic first aid kit to deal with any minor illnesses or injuries whilst you’re away. Again your pharmacy can help with that.”
If you’re travelling in Europe be sure to carry with you a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This is available free at www.ehic.org.uk.
