WORCESTERSHIRE carers are being encouraged to look after themselves this winter, so they can continue their vital role.

The county council says that often carers are so focused on looking after the person they care for that they can easily overlook their own health needs and become unwell themselves.

A carer is anybody who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty or disability, and provides the care unpaid.

Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member with responsibility for health and well-being, said: “Carers are hugely important for society.

“However, too often carers neglect their own health putting the person they are caring for first.

"It’s not too late for a free flu jab. If the carer receives Carers Allowance then they don’t have to pay. Not only will it protect them, but will protect those they are caring for.

“Carers often help patients that are ready for discharge from hospital to get home quicker. Staying on a ward when you don’t need to isn’t fun for anyone.

"We have carers to thank for helping out family members and friends.”
