A MAN has died after being hit by a train at Norton, near Worcester.

West Mercia Police received calls around 9am yesterday (Wednesday) from members of the public concerned for the welfare of a man near Norton Junction.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “On arrival crews discovered a male patient who had been in collision with a train.

“Unfortunately, it quickly became evident that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

An ambulance, a paramedic area support officer, a senior paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance rapid response crew from Strensham were called to Norton Sidings on Woodbury Lane where the incident took place.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “At about 9am a train travelling from Cardiff struck a person.

"Police, ambulance and Network Rail staff attended the scene and services were temporarily stopped while a police investigation took place."

Officers from British Transport Police also attended the scene and are leading the investigation.

A BTP spokesperson said: “Officers will now look to identify the person and inform their family.  "A file will be prepared for the coroner. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

The rail line between Cheltenham Spa and Worcester Shrub Hill and Bromsgrove was blocked causing delays until around 12.30pm but has now been re-opened.
