A WOMAN and small child have been rescued from the river in Worcester.

Police were called to Worcester Bridge, near New Road, at just after 5pm today, Saturday, to reports of people in the water.

Duty Inspector Andy Smith said:

"When police got there, an ambulance and paramedics were already there and treating a female and child who had been pulled from the river. They were taken to Worcester Royal Hospital for check ups.

"We do not know the circumstances surrounding the incident or whether the child had slipped in the river and the female went in afterwards to rescue them.

"I believe a life ring was used to rescue them."

Fire crews from Worcester, Droitwich and Malvern also attended but the rescue had already taken place when they arrived.
