VOLUNTEERS whose "vital" work helps care for patients at St Richard's Hospice will be celebrated next week.

Nearly a thousand people volunteer with the hospice in a variety of ways, from fundraising to supporting patients in their homes.

During Volunteers Week, which runs from next Wednesday to Sunday, June 12, a series of events will take place to thank those who give up their time to help the hospice.

Anna Wharrier, volunteer services coordinator at St Richard's, said: "We couldn’t run the hospice as we do without the vital help and support we receive from our volunteers.

"We are eternally grateful to each one for their dedication and generosity. Many people tell us that volunteering with us has made a huge difference to them, both personally and professionally.

"There are always opportunities to join our team of volunteers, whatever skills individuals may bring, and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who may be interested in donating a few hours to help us care."

To celebrate the efforts of retired volunteers, a lunch will be held at the hospice's Wildwood Drive headquarters in Worcester on Thursday, June 9.

Then, on Sunday, June 12, a cream tea party will be held at the hospice's HQ, with entertainment from champion Irish dancers and saxophonist Mandy Harding, who is also a volunteer driver with St Richard’s.

Last year, supporters gave 156,000 hours of their time to help the hospice care for patients and their families, saving the charity £1,112,000.
