A PRIMARY school on the outskirts of Worcester is urging parents to consider if it could be suitable for their children.

Sytchampton Endowed Primary School is just a few miles along the A449 from Worcester but as a first school, historically, it was linked to Stourport and Droitwich schools.

However, staff believe the school can offer its services to more of the city's pupils since becoming a primary two years ago.

Eight families from Worcester, concerned about places at nearby over-subscribed Northwick Manor, have visited the school with four of the families opting to apply for places.

As we reported, this year 47 more families applied for places at Northwick Manor Primary School than there were spaces.

30 of those initially refused placements were in catchment and were offered places at schools across the city.

Northwick has now agreed to put on an extra class, taking this September's reception year to 120 pupils.

Sytchampton's head Sharon Williams said: "Some families have come out to have a look at us.

"They've looked and noticed we are there and when they've looked around they are impressed with what they see.

"We are a small rural school and we can offer that.

"Eight families looked and four are definitely going to stay.

"They were offered schools in the city but they didn't want to have to commute across the city."

Mrs Williams said the school officially feeds to Stourport High but also had children which went on to go to other schools in Worcester and Droitwich.

This September, Sytchampton will celebrate the school including a year six for the first time.

The school opted to move to primary in 2014 after a consultation showed parents were overwhelmingly in favour.

Mrs Williams added: "We want to keep the school going, a school which has been going here since the 1800s.

"I'm so thrilled this school is a success and we are now taking it forward."

Gema Guscott's son was not offered a place at any of her preferred choices and will now start at Sytchampton in September.

Mrs Guscott said: "After a month of worry and stress we are very happy to have found Sytchampton and we're all looking forward to starting this new adventure."
