AS THE sun blazed on the hottest day of the year ,a group of nifty knitters held a very quirky fundraising idea.

In the cool of the Odeon Cinema, over 30 people watched Florence Foster Jenkins while busy knitting and crocheting to raise money for Target Ovarian Cancer.

While the rest of Worcester were busy sweating in the heat, knitting needles were being put to good use on yarny projects on Tuesday morning.

Elaine Morris came up with the idea to knit while watching a feel good film and worked alongside cinema host James Taundry to make it a reality.

Friend Jean Paskell, who regularly attends the Foregate Street cinema's Silver Cinema, helped to organise the screening which raised about £200.

She said: "Odeon Worcester gave us enormous support, giving us the use of the screen and film for free so all the money went to charity.

"Anyone who attends the Odeon will know James and his fabulous personality, he is always enthusiastic and helpful, obviously loves people and his job.

"James was the person who made it all happen.

"We also need to recognise the generosity of businesses in Worcester and our friends, who donated the excellent raffle prizes, contributing £80 towards our £222 total.

"Not to overlook the great feedback we had from the people who attended, they loved the film and told us what a good time they'd had - knitters and non knitters.

"We felt at least we would increase awareness of the charity and the dreadful disease and hopefully raise some money.

"Elaine, James and I are thrilled by the result and very pleased that everyone enjoyed themselves."

Mr Taundry said: "When I was first approached about this idea by Jean I had to chuckle because it sounded like such a fun and off the wall idea for a cinema.

"Knitting while watching a film? Inspired! And for such a good cause too.

"We're always happy to help with any charity we can, and currently we're trying to raise funds for MIND, in aid of mental health, but Target Ovarian Cancer also does such an important work, so we were only too happy to do what we could for them.

"As it happens we all had a lot of fun, some brilliant prizes were raffled off to some very fortunate and happy people, and I know I've been left with a big grin from the experience.

"I'm really happy our guests had a good time and personally seeing them with such big smiles and the help we did made everything worthwhile.

"It's not often you get to put on such a novel type of screening after all."
