A MASSIVE roof fire that forced the closure of the A38 in Severn Stoke, Worcester, is being investigated as suspected arson West Mercia Police have confirmed.

The Worcester News reported on the blaze on the roof of Old School House on Saturday evening, which saw fire crews from across Worcester called in to bring it under control.

Ladders and a crane was used to reach the roof after the fire started at around 6pm, with police not reopening the road next to the building until 11.30pm.

Police cordoned off entrances to the site, and vehicles could still be seen next to the building on Sunday.

In a statement, a spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "There were no injuries and the property is unoccupied.

"Police are currently investigating as it is suspected this fire may have been started deliberately. "

The building has been derelict for 10 years but previously was a popular venue, at various times being used as a nightclub, a restaurant, a country club and wedding venue, and as a hotel.
