FOOTBALL teams from two Worcester pubs met on Saturday for a friendly but hard-fought charity fundraising match.

The teams, from the Swan Inn, Barbourne, and the Talbot in the Tything, played the match at Tudor Grange school to raise money for the fight against leukaemia.

The event was organised by Shane Boswell and Sean Powell, because one of the Swan's barmaids, Sam Slaney, is currently being treated for the disease.

Claire Bull of the Swan said: "People just wanted to do something to help, because Sam has just been so throng and inspirational. She's really gone through the mill, but she's never let it get her down.

"She's in hospital at the moment, and she's going to get a bone marrow transplant any time now."

Saturday's event featured stalls, facepainting, a tombola and much more, but the match was the main focus of attention, with the Swan winning it 4-3.

It was followed by a cup presentation at the Talbot, after which the teams, friends and supporters trooped off to the Swan for the evening event, which included an auction and music from DJ Mad Mick.

"I've never organised anything like this before," she said. "Everyone worked really hard to make it a success, and local businesses have been incredibly generous in helping is with things like prizes and sponsorship. It would take too long to list everyone that we have to say thank-you to, but we really are grateful to everyone who contributed.

"The only problem was had was the weather. It had stopped raining by the afternoon, but it was still windy and than meant we couldn't put up the bouncy castles and gazebos that we wanted."
