A VIGILANT man is warning others after he managed to evade a conwoman claiming to be from Sky TV attempting to steal his bank details.

The man from St John's, Worcester, who asked not to be named, said vulnerable people may fall prey to the scam because the caller knew his full name and address.

He was called by a woman claiming she was from the company and gave his full name and address.

"She said my Sky viewing card expired in the next six days and they were in the process of sending out a new viewing card.

"Then she said "All we need to do to confirm everything is we need you bank sort code" I asked her why she needed it and she said it was to check that it coordinated with the details.

"I said I wasn't going to give it out and would be hanging up but she was trying to reassure me they were covered by financial services and wouldn't reveal details to a third party.

"It was obvious she was reading from a script but she was so convincing.

"I said I wasn't going to be giving her any information and put the phone down."

He contacted Sky who confirmed it was a scam and his viewing card was not due to expire.

The man also reported the incident to a police community support officer.

"I am a cynical old bugger so I thought why should should they ask for just my bank sort code and not my account number?

"What I think would have happened is she would have called and said they had checked sort code against their details and they don't match so would have then asked for my account number and other information.

"What made it more plausible is they didn't ask for the account number immediately.

"She was so convincing."

Anyone who receives scam phone calls should contact police on the non-emergency number 101 and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

A Sky Spokeswoman said they would advise anyone who is concerned whether a call is from the company of not to hang up and call them back.

Sky would never contact a customer to request a payment over the phone for a replacement viewing card.

Sky advisors are trained on what to do when customers contact them to report alleged fraudulent activity including where the fraudsters claim affiliation with Sky.

A robust security system is in place which means they log complaints from customers relating to fraudulent or criminal activity committed by third parties.
