THE mayor of Worcester is hoping to spread some Christmas cheer by hosting a festive lunch for 120 homeless and disadvantaged people at the Guildhall.

Cllr Paul Denham has worked with the YMCA, St Paul’s Hostel, Maggs Day Centre, CCP, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Worcester Foodbank to help invite guests to the event, being held on Tuesday.

He said: “Every year the mayor of Worcester holds a banquet, but this year I wanted to help those who are struggling to put food on their tables, keep warm or even have a roof over their head.

“This is just one small gesture, and I don’t pretend that it will resolve the complex problems which many homeless people face. However, I hope it will spread some good cheer and encourage others to take practical action to help the homeless and disadvantaged.”

Guests will be treated to a traditional Christmas lunch.

Waitrose’s new Worcester store is donating all the vegetables and Christmas puddings for the meal, and the turkey with all the trimmings will be paid for from the mayor’s budget. Staff from YMCA will cook the lunch.
