VISITORS to the Museum of Royal Worcester this year are in for a treat as members of staff and volunteers are offering a heartfelt insight into their favourite pieces in the collection.

On the first Wednesday of each month, one of the staff or volunteers will give a 10-minute presentation about an item in the museum which they particularly love. The frequency is likely to increase to once a week after Easter when the tourist season gets into full swing.

The idea was initiated after museum director Amanda Savidge visited the Turner gallery (known as Turner Contemporary) in Margate where they were offering visitors a similar experience.

“I went to the Turner gallery and it was going on there and I thought it was a really good idea,” she said.

Called “My Favourite Thing” and organised by the museum’s events coordinator and development assistant Karin de Figueiredo, it will take place in various parts of the museum at 11am on Wednesdays.

Karin said: “They will be quite informal, snappy little talks and it gives us a chance to interact with visitors. I have chosen to talk about the Hand Vase – a porcelain hand holding an urn. It’s a bit macabre and very unusual.

“Most of us will choose two things to talk about on different occasions and we might show visitors photographs of the person who made it or sketches used in the design.”
