A MAN was attacked by a gang carrying a hammer and screwdriver in Worcester.

The incident happened at about 9.20pm on Tuesday evening in Back Lane South, Barbourne.

Police are calling the attack "concerning" but say they believe it was an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the public.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said: "I was watching a crime show on Netflix, when I heard shouting and swearing.

"I realised it couldn't be coming from the film, and that it was from outside.

"I looked out the window. There was a gang, all wearing balaclavas. One had a clawhammer, another one had a screwdriver. There was a lot of blood.

"They ran off to the Swan Theatre.

"I left the flat, dialled 999, and chased after one, but stopped in my tracks when I realised he had a hammer. I thought 'what am I doing'.

"The police arrived. There were about 15 to 20 coppers. I have never seen so many police in my life."

The witness said the road was closed until around 2.45am on Wednesday, when the road was reopened by police.

Police say they responded to reports of a 'public order' incident in which seven men are reported to have assaulted a 23-year-old man, leaving him with minor injuries.

They are described as white, in their 30s and all were wearing dark clothing.

Inspector Andy Holliday, who is leading the investigation, said:

“This is undoubtedly a concerning incident for the victim as well as the local community but I would like to offer my assurances that the incident will be investigated thoroughly.

"There is no evidence at this stage to suggest any wider threat to the public and the incident is being dealt with as a targeted and isolated assault.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101, quoting incident number 721s of February 21.
