DOZENS of beautiful blooms will fill a church this weekend to mark a parishoner's 80th birthday celebrations.

Freda Davies, from Worcester, will host a flower festival at St Philip and St James Church, in Hallow, from Saturday, April 29 to Monday, May 1.

Mrs Davies, who recently turned 80, is hoping to raise money for the church throughout the three-day festival.

She has themed the celebrations around 'pearls of wisdom', with about 36 floral displays interpreting well-known parables and proverbs.

Mrs Davies, from Beaconhill Drive, said: "I wanted my birthday to be special, not for me but so that everybody can enjoy it as well.

"I moved to the parish of Hallow in 1960 and got involved with the church where I have been fundraising ever since.

"We have had a lot of flower festivals over the years and the last one was eight years ago.

"I think everybody enjoys flower festivals, people come along, they wander round, they sit out in the marquee and have a cup of tea and people come and see friends. It is very much a community event."

Alongside a host of floral displays, visitors to the festival can also enjoy coffee and cream teas, before browsing a plant sale.

Festivities will get underway from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Monday, and from noon until 6pm on Sunday.
