A WORCESTER News reporter has tweeted from the scene in Greece where a bomb exploded inside the car of former Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos.

Mr Papademos and two Bank of Greece employees were injured in the blast earlier today and were described as being hospitalised but in a stable condition.

Our reporter Matthew Dresch, who is on holiday in Athens, heard about the bomb, which happened at around 6.30pm local time, and went to the scene on 3rd September Street.

There he spoke to some of those who had heard the bomb go off.

He tweeted: "Apostolos Maniateas, 22, was at the gym when the bomb exploded a few hundred metres away from his home in #Athens.

"He said he feels lucky."

In another tweet, he said: "A barber who works in Stournari, #Athens, said he heard the bomb go off in 3rd September Street but thought it was a car crash.

"He was cutting a customer's hair at the time of the explosion.

"People came into the shop and told him it was a bomb."

Mr Dresch said police were still at the scene at 9.30pm local time.

Mr Papademos, 69, who served as prime minister for six months in 2011-2012 and is also a former deputy governor of the European Central Bank, had been inside his car when the device detonated.

Police have not officially confirmed reports that the blast was caused by a parcel bomb containing a small amount of explosives.

But the explosion was thought to have occurred when Mr Papademos opened an envelope inside the car.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
