CAN you grow a giant cabbage or a whopping onion?

Gardeners are among those wanted to enter a popular Worcester show - but it's not just about big vegetables.

There are also competition classes for displaying flowers and floral decorations, creating handicrafts and photography, baking and modelling - and it's not too late to enter.

The 2017 Worcester Show celebrates creativity with more than 120 classes and takes place in Gheluvelt Park in August.

Gerry Leith, chairman of the Worcester Show committee, said: “The Show celebrates the amazing creativity of local people, and is a really fun day out for the whole family.

"If gardening isn’t your thing, there are many artistic and creative classes on offer too.

"Enthusiasm is the only quality you need to enter!”

Photographers can enter their best black and white photo, an amusing shot with caption, and a photo of a Worcestershire landmark.

The judge for the photography section, John Burrows, said: “What will I be looking for? Ideally, pictures that are well composed, in focus where they need to be, have lighting that adds interest and mood to the image.

“We want images which are not just record shots, but show subjects photographed maybe from a different angle, and last but not least, pictures that have a WOW! factor."

Brian Sampson, an enthusiastic local gardener, regularly enters and has won the coveted ‘Best In Show’ title on three occasions, enjoying success with his giant cabbages, marrows, onions and beans.

He said: "There is a lot of luck involved – you don’t know what the quality of your produce will be like until you dig it up about three weeks before the show.

"The event is a good opportunity to get advice from other gardeners, who are always happy to share their tips.”

It's free to enter and the deadline to enter all the classes is Monday, August 7 – apart from the photography categories, which have an earlier deadline of 5pm on Wednesday, August 2.

The show takes place on Sunday, August 13 and more details are available at worcestershow.org.uk.
