AN extravaganza of music and dance lit up the city this afternoon at the first ever Worcestershire Pride.

The event kicked off at noon with a speech by Worcester Mayor Steve Mackay.

The free inclusive event features live music and performances, a dance tent and a family area provided by Fortis Living.

The event will continue with music and performance until 8pm.

Chairman of Worcestershire Pride Andre Oldfield said: "The fact that this is happening in the first place is a massive move for Worcester.

He added: "It has been really amazing. Everyone has been absolutely fabulous."

Stage manager and Worcestershire Pride secretary Nicole Roman said: "It is a great event. We started last year and it took a whole year to organise."

Beaded drag act Princx said she was excited for the rest of the schedule, particularly co-hosting the event with X-Factor star Ginny Lemon.

She added: "We want to try to keep this event going."

Woofy Powder, whose real name is Mary Hughes, read a range of LGBT children's stories to youngsters at the family-friendly event.

She said: "I am so proud of everybody. I know everyone worked really hard for this- it is amazing."

The line-up includes one of last year’s X-Factor contestants Freddy Parker and features dozens of acts, including Zara Sykes and Beth Prior.

Worcestershire Pride will not only mark the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England, but Saturday is also Bi-Visibility Day.

The event will also highlight homophobic hate crime in Worcestershire and offer advice on how to report it.

It is taking place at The Fountains and Copenhagen Street car park by South Quay.
