THE mum of a toddler who has undergone five heart surgeries has donated £200, raised by the care home where she used to work, to the hospital that saved her little girl’s life.

Sophia Marshall’s daughter Sophia, two, had a cardiac arrest at home in Wychbold at two days old, with doctors surprised she then survived the journey to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Days later, she was strong enough to come off life support, and Mrs Marshall said doctors informed her and husband Samuel, Sophia had several very complex cardiac conditions.

On Valentine’s Day, Rashwood Care Home, Wychbold, raised the money with a raffle and coffee and cake afternoon.

Mrs Marshall, who was a guest of honour on the day alongside Sophia, then donated the proceeds to the hospital’s heart unit last week.

Emma Williams, social engagement leader at the care home, said: “A lot of staff and residents follow Sophia’s progress and we wanted to do something to show our support.

“Chantelle told us the unit always needs lots of fun toys for the children, who are in having treatment, to keep them happy.”

One of the raffle prizes was a large teddy which was won by care home volunteer Tina McLean, who then donated it to the unit as well.

“We had a Valentines raffle and a Coffee and cake afternoon and raised £200.38,” continued Mrs Williams.

“We were so lucky to have Sophia and Chantelle as our guests of honour.

“Sophia is a true heart warrior and a beautiful smiley girl and she has a special place in our hearts.

“Thank you to everyone who come to support our event,” she added.

Sophia’s parents are also encouraging others to join them in taking part in the Worcester Hearty Walk on Sunday, April 15, which last year raised £4,600 for the British Heart Foundation.
