THE man in charge of policing in Worcester and across South Worcestershire has announced he is leaving.

Supt Steve Cullen will officially leave his post tomorrow after two years in the role, although he is currently on holiday.

He will start a new role on Saturday implementing West Mercia and Warwickshire Police’s local policing plan following their alliance.

Yesterday West Mercia Police said no one had yet been appointed to take over as superintendent for South Worcestershire, but said a successor would be announced shortly.

In his final column for your Worcester News , Supt Cullen said he was looking forward to the “exciting challenge” of his new task. “The last two years have been the most enjoyable of my career,” he said. “That’s due to the unstinting support I have enjoyed from the community and the tremendous people I have the privilege to lead.

“They have been loyal, supportive, professional and committed, and all with good humour.

“I cherish so many moments from my time leading policing in the area.”

During his time as superintendent, Mr Cullen has overseen a number of huge events, including the Olympic Torch Relay and the Queen’s visit in July.

As previously reported in your Worcester News West Mercia recently signed a four-year alliance with Warwickshire Police in a bid to reduce operating costs.

West Mercia Police needs to reduce its operating costs by £20.1 million by the end of 2015/16 and Warwickshire by £10.2 million.
