County's pupils prove their green credentials

SCHOOL children from throughout the county have been battling it out against their peers from across the border as part of a environmental competition.

The competition, Universally Challenged, hosted by Worcestershire County Council, is based on a sustainability quiz consisting of six rounds of 10 questions.

It pitted Year 8 pupils, aged 12 and 13, from Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, Worcester, The Chase, Malvern, Hagley RC High School in Stourbridge, and Chantry High School, Worcester, against each other to win a place in the final, to be held at the University of Warwick in the New Year.

Each school entered four contestants and all the questions they faced were based on the topic of sustainability, the environment and climate change.

Cllr Alwyn Davies, chairman of Worcestershire County Council, said: “Universally Challenged was a fantastic opportunity for schools to highlight their knowledge about environmental issues, and it was great to see that young people in Worcestershire have so much enthusiasm for sustainability.”

The eventual winners of the heat, held on Tuesday, December 9, were Chantry High School.

They will now go on to represent the county of Worcestershire at the final in February.
