Hunting Act does not satisfy people

SIR – According to J Norwood (February 3) the Hunting Act should satisfy all parties concerned – well, clearly it does not.

At present the anti-hunting fraternity wants the Act tightened to such a degree that no one would dare let their dog off the lead for fear of prosecution. An admission of failure on their part.

The Act was cobbled together by people ignorant of animal welfare and the countryside. Magistrates and judges have pointed out how its confusing detail means reaching a verdict is extremely difficult.

A recent High Court judgement has now so discredited the Act that it will be almost impossible to enforce. This test case made clear the legislation had even failed to abide by the Great British legal principle of being innocent until proven guilty. The Hunting Act 2004 is a total failure, losing support all round and it must be scrapped. This should be followed by a period of measured debate and proper research and, if needed, future legislation must be based on the sound principles of animal welfare and conservation.
