Sir – With the reports that local farmers are rejoicing their move into supplying halal meat, I have been waiting for a reaction from the animal protection brigade, who in 2001 almost declared war on me in these columns over fox hunting and laboratory controlled medical research.
In a letter (February 27) in reply I said that should they demonstrate in Worcester against halal religious slaughter (slaughter without stunning) I would join them. This offer still stands.
More than 100 million animals a year are killed for kosher and halal meat in Britain, and certain cuts such as the hind-quarters of cattle are deemed inedible by religious teachings and are passed back to the food chain for general consumption. There are moves that by 2010 this meat should be labelled accordingly halal, kosher.

Worcester.
