Droitwich Spa High School: School is praised for business skills

MORE than 300 pupils from Droitwich Spa High School won top marks for their entrepreneurial skills which were put to the test to raise money for Worcester’s St Richard’s Hospice.

The pupils, with the support of members of staff, took part in the hospice’s flourishing fivers scheme – in which they are given £5 each and asked to turn it into even more cash for the charity.

Each tutor group of year eight was given £5 and asked to see how much they could make it grow by using their resourcefulness.

They came up with a range of activities from washing cars to baking cakes to sell at a parents’ evening.

Some offered themselves as slaves for a day to their family members and one creative group designed and produced a range of book marks.

Other initiatives included making phone charms, running a ‘singstar’ competition and dog walking.

The 11 tutor groups were given £55 – £5 per tutor group – which they grew into £881.40.

Alison Weston, St Richard’s Hospice community fundraiser, said: “The pupils raised a wonderful amount thanks to their determination, initiative and business skills. They are a credit to the school and the hospice and we are very grateful for their continued support.”

● Year eight pupils from RGSAO in Worcester raised a magnificent £3,441 for St Richard’s Hospice in the flourishing fivers initiative.

The pupils raised the cash through a variety of fundraising schemes, including a Strictly Come Dancing event, collecting and raffling sports memorabilia and selling cakes and crafts.

● Pupils from Pershore High School also won top marks for their entrepreneurial skills in the flourishing fivers scheme.

A group of pupils, aged 12 and 13, have raised £2,700 with a range of activities from baking cakes to sell to friends and local people to creating and selling home made cards.

● Youngsters from Chantry High School in Martley put their best foot forward to raise money for the hospice.

About 140 pupils aged 12 and 13 in year eight tackled a three-kilometre sponsored walk along local footpaths.

Pupils also held sports competitions, car washing and raffles to raise £2,139 as part of the hospice’s flourishing fivers scheme.
