ALI Abbas of the Worcester Shukokai Karate Federation Club took on the best of the West Midlands and came back with a gold medal by winning the 12 to 14-year-old age category in the kimite or sparring event at Blackheath.

More than 10 clubs were represented and the standard was very high.

On his way to the gold, Abbas beat a Great Britain team member who is a current European and world champion.

After three hard fights, Abbas was pleased with the result. He said: “I knew I could do well although my fellow competitors were all tough opponents.”

Worcester sensei Steve Farrow said: “This is another boost for Worcester and shows once again what talent we have in the city.

“Success breeds success so hopefully more youngsters will come and see us at the club to develop their full potential and win more medals.”

Olivia Taylor-Rodrigues from the Pershore Shukokai Club also won a gold medal in the kata Under 14s regional championships.
