GREG Mills believes being at Worcester City is helping him return to his best.

In recent weeks, the speedy winger, pictured left, has shown just what he is capable of with goals against both Guiseley and Chester.

He was also City’s main attacking threat in a man-of-the-match display in last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Halifax at St George’s Lane.

Mills has taken a while to come to the boil this season, having struggled to find a level of consistency in his game.

The former Telford wideman even admits he deserved to be left out of the team by manager Carl Heeley following a summer during which he had to deal with personal issues.

But he feels being able to talk to his team-mates, as well as Heeley and assistant Matt Gardiner, has held him in good stead and the 22-year-old is now reaping the rewards.

“I am just enjoying my football again,” Mills said. “By my own admission, earlier in the season I wasn’t playing as well as I was at the end of last season. But I spoke to Matt and Carl about what I needed to do mentally and physically.

“I needed to get fitter and get my head back on football and I feel in the last few weeks it’s all come together.

“Carl and Matt have stuck by me and kept faith in me. I was dropped for a couple of games but I felt that was the right thing to do because I wasn’t performing and it spurred me on.

"I have been doing better and I am doing things right off the pitch as well as on it.”

He continued: “The other lads – like Stuart Whitehead, Rob Elvins, Matt Birley and Lee Ayres – have all helped me, I have not done it by myself.

“A lot of the lads have spoken to me about what I need to do to help my game.

“When I am confident I am a good player so hopefully I can keep this confidence up, have a good run in the team and help the lads win.”

The next opportunity for that is against fourth-placed Bradford Park Avenue at the Lane on Saturday, a team City surrendered a two-goal lead against on the opening day of the campaign.

After that, it’s Droylsden away followed by Gloucester City and Gainsborough Trinity at home.

Mills said: “I think there’s a lot more still to come from the team, starting against Bradford Park Avenue. I think we are a lot stronger now, we are a tight group and mentally a lot stronger.

“I think if we were 2-0 up again I wouldn’t see them coming back.

“At home, with the crowd behind us, I think if we go 1-0 or 2-0 up the confidence will go through the team like it has in other games.

“We need to beat Bradford if we want to stay in the play-off hunt, we need to beat the teams around us and Christmas is a big period.

“I think the next four games are big and the team feel we can get 12 points.”
