HEREFORD United’s famous victory over Newcastle United more than 40 years ago is in the running to be voted the greatest FA Cup giantkilling of all-time.

The 2-1 replay triumph during the 1971-72 season, when Ricky George struck an extra-time winner at Edgar Street following Ronnie Radford’s equaliser, is one of five games shortlisted by broadcaster ESPN.

It is part of a competition to find the tournament’s most memorable moments with a different voting category being selected ahead of each round, including greatest FA Cup goals and comebacks.

The Hereford game is up against Colchester United’s 3-2 fifth-round victory over Leeds United in 1970-71 and Bournemouth’s third-round 2-0 win against then-holders Manchester United in 1983-84.

Wrexham’s 2-1 defeat of Arsenal in the 1991-92 campaign and Sutton United beating Coventry City 2-1 in 1988-89 complete the line-up.

Fans can select their favourite giantkilling by visiting ESPN.co.uk/facuppoll until Sunday, January 20.

They can also win two tickets to the final in May by sharing their views on Twitter using #ToTheDream.

Charles Classen, from ESPN, said: “The FA Cup is one of the world’s most loved and treasured tournaments. Every fan has their own special connection to football’s oldest cup competition.”

Hereford have rearranged their postponed home match with Newport County for Tuesday, March 5, and the trip to Ebbsfleet United for Tuesday, February 19.
