Worcester Warriors prop Matt Mullan's move to London Wasps confirmed

STING IN THE TAIL: Matt Mullan has signed for Wasps. STING IN THE TAIL: Matt Mullan has signed for Wasps.

WARRIORS’ England Saxons prop Matt Mullan’s expected move away from Worcester has been confirmed by the news he will join Wasps next season.

As reported in your Worcester News last week, the Sixways club have been unable to persuade the academy-produced front-rower to renew his contract that expires at the end of this term and he has opted for a switch to Adams Park.

It is the latest blow for beleaguered Warriors, who are also facing up to the fact that Matt Kvesic, who has been training with the England senior squad, will also leave the club to join Gloucester.

Capped by England at full international level in 2010, 25-year-old Mullan’s progress at international level was slowed through injury, however last summer he kick-started his international career, touring with the senior England squad to South Africa and starting both midweek matches.

More recently, he earned himself a call-up into the England EPS squad as an injury replacement during the Autumn International series and he came off the bench for the England Saxons last weekend.

Mullan said: “I have had a great eight years at Worcester and leaving your home town club is always hard. However, I felt the time was right for a new challenge and I am looking forward to joining up with Wasps next season.

“As a club with lots of other aspiring young English players, I hope to be part of a successful side there in the coming years.”

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young added: “Matt’s achieved plenty in his career to date, but I believe there is a lot more to come from him.

“He will add to our growing base of young English talent at Wasps and we’re pleased he will be with us from next season.”

I believe that these last 2 defections show a lack of belief in the competence of the Warriors management and coaching capability . If a player does not feel that they will develop to their full potential then they must fulfil that need elsewhere .This latest episode represents a vote of NO CONFIDENCE !

I believe that these latest defections show a lack of gratitude to the club that has developed both players to international standard at a young age. It has nothing to do with developing to their full potential and everything to do with moving to clubs that potentially offer a quick route to HC rugby rather than working for it with Worcester. Both episodes represent a triumph of perceived self interest over any semblance of loyalty.

Meanwhile, in other news, Wasps 20-year old England prospect and back row forward, Billy Vunipola, joins Saracens. And George Ford, 19 and former IRB World Junior Player of the Year, is tipped to be leaving Leicester Tigers for Bath, allegedly in search of more game time.

Shurely shome mishtake. We all know that it's only Warriors that are unable to hold onto their young, ambitious players.

Matt has been going a bit stale this year for Warriors I think the new surroundings will do him good and help him back into the England shirt, it is a shame but that is life.

Well said Bertie it is not only the Warriors who have young England players leave them. That is life what we must do is replace them and move on.
