Perdiswell stadium plans give City supporters fresh hope
10:00am Wednesday 30th January 2013 in Sport
NEW HOME?: Worcester City’s Supporters’ Trust would like to build a community sports hub on land at Perdiswell Leisure Centre which would also be the club’s new home.
THE news that Worcester City Supporters’ Trust want to build a stadium at Perdiswell has certainly got tongues wagging.
To say the announcement, presented to the group’s members last Friday and reported in this paper the following morning, took fans by surprise would be an understatement.
It was pretty much the sole topic of conversation in the St George’s Lane bar at the weekend — that and the team’s 3-2 defeat to Histon — and will be for some time to come.
For years, all the talk surrounding a new ground had been about Nunnery Way.
It was the only thing fans heard and, with nothing having happened since planning permission was granted more than a year ago, many had stopped caring.
But the new proposals, if nothing else, have given them hope that there might be light at the end of the tunnel for the 108-year-old club.
Contracted to Nunnery Way the club may be, but the Trust have now come up with an alternative.
It is important to state that the plans being put forward by the Trust are completely separate to the club.
They are acting independently because they believe Nunnery Way will never happen.
The City board remain tied to a contract with St Modwen to provide a ground on that site until 2017, even though they cannot afford to build anything.
Even if they were in favour of the Trust’s plans, they are very unlikely to say so publicly for fear of breaching any deal with the Birmingham-based property developer.
As far as the club are concerned, the only way is Nunnery Way.
So let’s focus on what the Trust are doing. They want to build a community facility — which Nunnery Way would not be — that, alongside the proposed swimming pool development, would form part of a sports hub.
It would provide a home for many local teams, not just City, and would still be there even if the club was to go out of business which, like it or not, remains a real possibility. The Trust know this but they have not thrown the plan together on a whim; many months of hard work has gone on behind the scenes by dedicated individuals.
Discussions have been held with Worcester City Council, the location thought through and plans drawn up.
By the time designs have been put before the planning committee, a decision on whether the scheme gets the green light could come as early as April.
Plenty of questions still remain about the Perdiswell proposal, most of which will hopefully be answered when the plans are submitted. Among them will be space — we do not yet know how many acres a new ground would take up.
Residents in the Bilford Road area, who already have the council tip on their doorstep adding to the traffic, are certain to have an opinion.
The community share scheme seems a good idea, raising £1million on top of hoped-for grants will also be tough in the economic climate.
While there may not be any guarantee the scheme will be approved, the Trust have done what they can and nobody will be able to say they didn’t try.

No-one but St Modwen wants WCFC at Nunnery Way (and they are only using it as the "catalyst" to gain access to protected greenfields for further "mixed use" development.)
-
Time for Hampson and the WCFC directors to publicly renounce the ill-conceived and poorly-advised St Modwen deal and come out in full-throated support of this Perdiswell plan.

The contract signed by the discrdited old regime has Mr Hampson & CO. in a chokehold.

I'd like to congratulate the Worcester News on the above article. It's objective and accurate. Perhaps this is the start of a more open minded approach by the newspaper, to the club and its catastrophic ground move. If so, maybe it's time the self-styled "leader of the project" to move to Nunnery Way, i.e. Mr Hallmark, was asked some serious questions about what went on?

Is it not time for an EGM?

WCFC Ltd. did try to have the contracts considered frustrated, but SMD did not believe that having no money to build a stadium constituted a frustrated contract, but did point out that it constituted a breach of contract. The contract must surely "ultra vires" their authority as Directors, but herein lies the rub. WCFC Ltd. cannot afford to take on SMD via the courts! SMD must have rubbed their hands with glee when confronted by the might of Boddy, Hallmark and Lancaster! Archie you are right. Hallmark boasted of single handedly masterminding this project, of mentoring Boddy, before discarding him when he was seen to be worthless. So where is Hallmark now?

Before everyone starts banging on about how good it all is, lets see some plans and see what how the roads and open space are going to be affected.

The football club should be on the outskirts of the city- not in the middle of a residential area. It works for the Rugby Club. On the face of it unless you follow the club, it seem like a ridiculous idea. Even though the club only attracts around 1000 supporters, more traffic and parking chaos. New sport centre and swimming pool, I can live with-as this would be for the good of the entire community. But a football stadium to? No thanks. Its got to be a certain standard if it was supposed to be viable for WCFC to play there. So how much more open space will we loose? I thought that Perdiswell Park was for everyone to use? As for the pitch to be used by local clubs the pitches have been there for years, there was relaying and building of new changing facilities not so long ago. so this plan brings nothing different than we already have.

This is an opportunity to provide something new for the city youngsters, and the City council could be looking at what contribution they can make to this new vision.

They are not replacing the current AstroTurf.
The old Perdiswell (current) is to be knocked down leaving the changing room block standing alone.
Two of the current pitches are not used due to problems with drainage even though X amount was spent a few years ago.
You should just comment once all the plans have been released by both parties
