ARE Kidderminster Harriers on the verge of replicating their feat of 13 years ago and win promotion to the Football League?

That is not an unreasonable question to ask following Steve Burr’s remarkable rise from Blue Square Bet Premier strugglers to title contenders.

Having been languishing at the foot of the table without a win in their first 10 games of the season, being in the mix for honours looked impossible.

However, they host Alfreton today (3pm) having won 13 of their last 15 games and victory at Aggborough would take them into second spot because Wrexham and Grimsby Town have FA Trophy commitments.

Back in 1999-2000, the last time Harriers won the Conference under Jan Molby, they also endured a wretched start by losing four of their first five matches.

That might have been a slightly better start than this term but it still left the Aggborough outfit with plenty to do.

Is history about to repeat itself?

Manager Steve Burr certainly hasn’t ruled it out with 14 games remaining.

“Our aim is to try and finish as high as we can, obviously if we do carry on like this there’s a good chance we could end up winning it,” he said.

“I think that might be a bit beyond us but you never know in football.

“After those first 10 games, which weren’t so good, we kept believing in what we do. We’ve got a good group of lads here who are desperate to perform.”
