Tell me your memories of Worcester City's St George's Lane ground

Tell me your memories of Worcester City's St George's Lane ground Tell me your memories of Worcester City's St George's Lane ground

IT is quite incredible to think that, in just a few months time, the St George’s Lane ground will be no more.

In fact, there are just five more home matches to go before the bulldozers move in to demolish 108 years of Worcester City history.

Of those, just three are on Saturdays, while there is only one more Monday night fixture left. The other is on Easter Monday.

When put like that, it makes you realise what the club, and indeed the city in general, are about to lose for ever.

Sadly, given recent attendances, it also makes you wonder how much people actually care. Looking at the gates, it could just be any other season at the Lane.

The hoped-for bumper crowds flocking out of nostalgia haven’t materialised.

There is almost certain to be a capacity crowd for the final game against Chester on April 27 but almost half of that could be made up of away fans.

City’s last campaign at the Lane, it seems, has not captured the imagination of the wider public. Which is a real shame. The old place deserves a better send-off than that.

Which is why I am asking fans to tell everyone what they will most remember about visiting the Lane.

What was your favourite match and why? Which players do you recall most fondly? What have been the highs and lows? Were you taken there as a child and have been going to games ever since?

In essence, what does the Lane mean to you?

I remember as a child being taken by my Dad to watch City Reserves play Aston Villa A in the Birmingham league and the Villa had a very young side ably led by an inside left (as they were called then) by the name of Starling. He did nothing but shout at and encourage the young lads and my Dad said he lived up to his name for non stop chirping. Any one any idea of approx date ???

Before my time from a WCFC point of view, but wikipedia talks of a Ronnie Starling being with Villa from 37-38, including the first post-war season, then being on the fringes of the Villa side up to 1948 when he retired. So maybe 46-48 sometime?

As far as I know, noone has a list of all Reserve Team fixtures, but we do have a full list of the First Team's games.

That would fit with City first-team not being in the Birmingham League, with the new Southern League having just started up, and it is entirely feasible that they played a Reserve side in that league.
