Relegation hasn’t been in our thoughts says Warriors hooker Shervington

HOOKER Ed Shervington says relegation was never on the agenda at Sixways, despite the club’s poor run of form seeing them flirt with the Aviva Premiership dropzone.

A five-game losing streak following the 13-6 victory over London Welsh saw Worcester beginning to be reeled in by the three sides below them in the table.

However, the 29-23 bonus-point win over Wasps last time out stopped the rot and put some clear daylight between Warriors and the foot of the table.

“We never spoke about relegation and we weren’t in any doubt,” insisted Shervington. “We said in the build-up to the game that we could get four tries against Wasps and we did. We’re just looking to push on now.

“It was a huge relief to get the win. The game was emotional, the tension out there was huge. It’s not like we haven’t played with that emotion over these two-and-a-half months, but against Wasps we got everything right and it worked for us.

“There is relief there but we’re never in any doubt when we play. Losing at the death to Gloucester was a brutal feeling but it’s different weeks and we’re on top of the world now. We are looking forward.

“There’s never been a doubt of how together the side are. We’ve had some unlucky results. Wasps scored at the end and I was absolutely gutted as were all the other players.

“But we did enough before that to get the bonus-point win. We’re a really tight team and are all in it together. We’ve just not had the rub of the green.

“I didn’t even know we had scored four tries until I walked off the pitch. I don’t know if that reflects how tired I was or how focused we were.”

Worcester are in the middle of a two-week break from action, but all-action front-rower Shervington admits he’d rather be playing than having time to rest.

He added: “I’m not a big fan of breaks. We had that good run before Christmas and then we had a big break from the league and fell off a bit. The backroom staff are switched on and they’ll do things to keep us on track for the London Irish match and hopefully we’ll have them in the bag as well.”

Meanwhile, London Welsh have been deducted five points and fined £15,000 for fielding ineligible player Tyson Keats.

A further five-point deduction is suspended until the end of next season and will only be activated if the club breach regulations again during that period. Welsh are lodging an appeal.
