Worcester City captain Stuart Whitehead says his team aren't getting any luck

NO LUCK: Worcester City captain Stuart Whitehead. NO LUCK: Worcester City captain Stuart Whitehead.

CAPTAIN Stuart Whitehead says Worcester City have been left “dumbfounded” by their lack of luck in matches.

The centre-half feels decisions and deflections are conspiring against his team, particularly in last night’s 3-0 defeat against Gainsborough Trinity.

City fell behind to Luke Waterfall’s header, which came from a free-kick awarded for a handball by Charlie Reece, while Greg Young also profited from a corner before Simon Russell’s late penalty.

Whitehead said: “I’m a great believer that you make your own luck in the game but we’re getting no rub of the green at the moment.

“Gainsborough had two set-pieces and a penalty, that was it. We’ve had all the chances and come off with a 3-0 drubbing.

“We’re all dumfounded. Everyone worked as hard as they could but it’s not gone for us. That’s the way it’s going for us at the moment.

“Last Saturday against Boston, they scored with a deflection from a set-piece and then we gave the ball away for their player to rocket it into the top corner. Nothing is going for us and it’s hard to rally the lads when we’re in the rut we are in.”

But he added of the Trinity clash: “As hard as we’ve worked the first two goals were avoidable. All that hard work gets undone but switching off in the box and that’s not good enough.

“At this level you’ve got to make sure your man doesn’t score.”

Think I was at a different match than the captain last night regarding his quote "the City had all the chances".
The only time we looked threatening was in the last quarter of an hour when we seemed to wake up. Gainsborough were the better side because they created the chances and capitalized on our poor defending from set pieces. Could not understand a change of goalkeeper because alot of his kicks finished up either close to the commentary box or outside the playing area in fact thought he did not give any confidence to the team.
It was a slightly better display from Saturdays match but still far away from a result.
It is hoped that things get better soon because the attendance was low which is an indication to what will be the outcome regarding fans forking out £100 for next season. Two ardent supporters around me were hinting they may be better off supporting Cheltenham next season in view of travelling and what was being dished up at present. There is no doubt about it these are worrying times for the City at present and the longer it goes on even the loyalist supporters will be looking for other options.
I personally hope that things will get better very soon because it would be very sad to leave the lane on a low note.I have had fond memories of great matches I have witnessed over 53 years of supporting the City at St George's lane and will be sad to finally walk away.

You might lose one or maybe two matches through bad luck but six on the trot indicates something far deeper.
Going so long without a goal tends to naturally point fingers at the strikers, but the midfield doesn`t seem to be creating much.
I`ve thought since last season the best striking pair is Symons and Taylor but that would mean relegating last summer`s star signing to the bench - that probably comes under the heading "thinking the unthinkable".
Also, for all the stylish passing across the pitch, the defence-splitting pass and the quality cross hasn`t been part of city`s game for a long time.
Like upton kid, I`ve had some brilliant, thrilling times at SGL over 50 odd years and it really is sad it`s ending like it appears to be.
And the "double whammy" is seeing Steve Burr and Gary Wylde doing such a brilliant job up the road at Kidderminster - who`d have thought it after their first five games?

I like Carl Heeley, but he's now being linked with other teams, Telford mainly and if this run carries on, I think it might be time for him to go. His tactics in my opinion are mostly right, but their are a few things that bother me.

The games I've watched this season where we are winning towards the end of the match, Carl only uses 2 subs, I can only put this down to saving on an appearance fee for the player, but it's cost us 2-3 times.

The other tactical confusion for me is Rob Elvins, most of the fans like him, he's a good player who is respected by most the fans, but I'm sure he used to be a defender at Aldershot, signed with us as a striker, but now plays mostly midfield. Doesn't it sound like madness?

Eitherway, things need to turn around quick for the City, especially if they're going to get anywhere near the 1,500 season ticket holders they want.

Incorrect Rob Elvins was a striker at Aldershot and was signed as a striker, but (like Dion Dublin) was also know for a stint in Central Defence.

I think it was well documented that Rob took the central midfield told well and has had many good games in that position.

One of the most committed players to the City cause, think your comment has no justification !

By the way he also played in goal for 45 minutes

"Two ardent supporters around me were hinting they may be better off supporting Cheltenham next season in view of travelling and what was being dished up at present."

Don't you just love the stupidity of so called ardent fans? Worcester to Kidderminster - 16 miles, Worcester to Cheltenham - 26 miles!!

When Newport County found themselves homeless, supporters kept the "Exiles" going, travelling up to 50 miles to home games!

Referring to Hillbilly1 comments.
It all depends where these two supporters live regarding travel to Kidderminster in fact if they live in Upton it would be just as easy to get to Cheltenham.
The main concern is that a large majority of City fans are pensioners like myself . The cost of travelling to Kidderminster plus if it is a lousy day or night weather wise may well decide me and others to stop at home. In some circumstances ardent support will have to go on the back burner.

I didn't say I have anything wrong with Rob, in my opinion he's one of the better players we have, and have had over the past few years. Sure Rob has done pretty well in mid this year, but I'd much rather see him assisting the boys up front. The sad fact is something has to change on the pitch to get us back to winning the odd game or two.
