WORCESTER Nomads are hoping their new-look pavilion will help sustain the club for generations to come.

Two years of hard work will come to a head this weekend when the Bransford club officially unveil the revamped facility.

Nomads, this year making their debut in Birmingham League Division Three, have spent £65,000 building a new equipment store, scorebox and umpires’ changing facilities to meet league and England and Wales Cricket Board regulations.

In addition, they have extended their viewing area, installed a new kitchen and renovated the bar and toilets.

They were awarded a £50,000 ‘Inspired Facilities’ grant from Sport England’s Olympic Legacy fund and have been loaned the other £15,000 by the ECB.

The 86-year-old club are inviting players past and present to celebrate the completion of work, some of which has been carried out by volunteers, at their Station Road home at 4pm tomorrow.

Club president John Prickett will be assisted in re-opening the pavilion by junior players Joe Laugher and Oli Ranscombe.

Chairman Chris Marsh said: “The team is probably the best we’ve ever had, although they’re struggling this year. This is something for them and the juniors that haven’t yet got to that team but will do in time. It will be a legacy for them.

“If a group of people like our current committee have an opportunity to do something and grasp it, then they’re leaving it for the next generation.

“The fact we have taken £65,000 and made it comfortably into £100,000 worth of work is something for the club to be very proud of, especially a few particular individuals who have done the bulk of that work.”

In keeping with the theme of legacy, the new equipment store will be named after club stalwart Tony Andrews, a key figure in designing the plans, who passed away last December aged 76. The umpires’ facilities will be in honour of former county umpire Tony Inman.

Marsh added: “We want to dedicate different parts of what we have built to different ex-members and people who have died to remember them and have their names forever enshrined and connected with us.

“We’re hoping to have a nice, fine day and as many guests as possible. All past, present and future players, supporters, mums and dads, neighbours and sponsors are invited to come and see the improvements.

“All in all it will be a good celebration to mark the fact that there’s been so much hard work put in.”
