WHAT has happened at Evesham Cricket Club?
In the space of two years, they have dropped from Birmingham League Division One to Three and are staring down the barrel of a third consecutive relegation this season.
Quite incredibly, during that time they have also failed to win a match — the last time they tasted victory was nearly two years ago in August 2011.
As falls from grace go, it is up there with the most dramatic.
Not a single player that was with the club two years ago is there now. In fact, few of the current crop even come from Evesham, a situation repeated in the second XI as well.
Not surprisingly, club officials seem reluctant to discuss the situation, which can only leave us guessing at what has gone on behind the scenes. There have been suggestions of fall-outs in the committee and players being bussed in from Birmingham to form teams but Evesham is increasingly becoming a club shrouded in mystery.
No doubt, these things have alienated a lot of the club’s traditional supporters and distanced the club from the town it’s based.
Next season, barring the most unlikely of escapes, Evesham will back in the Worcestershire League.
The only sure thing is that the club is the poorer for whatever has gone on.
