WORCESTER City will be running the rule over a goalkeeper in tomorrow’s friendly at Nuneaton Town (3pm) as they seek competition for Matt Sargeant.

The keeper, whose identity is being kept under wraps ahead of the Liberty Way clash, will get his chance as Sargeant, currently the only custodian on the books following the departure of Glyn Thompson, is unavailable.

Because of that, manager Carl Heeley allowed Sargeant to play for Stourbridge in a 2-1 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday as cover for Dean Coleman.

But that was a one-off arrangement to give match minutes to his keeper, who is looking to make the number one jersey his own having played second fiddle to Thompson and, previously, James Dormand.

However, although money is tight for City, only having one keeper in the squad for the Conference North campaign would be a risk.

Heeley said: “It’s something we are looking at and we will have a lad playing for us tomorrow and we will see how that goes.”

Tomorrow is City’s second warm-up match following last Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Birmingham City in a behind-closed-doors encounter.

With games against lower league opposition to come in the next few weeks, Conference Premier Nuneaton will be the highest-ranked side Worcester will face before the season opener against Altrincham on August 17.

Despite the temperature gauge likely to once again tip 30 degrees, boss Heeley will cut down on the number of players he used against the Blues.

“We won’t take as many players this weekend, we will try and reduce it down to 18,” he said.

“It will be difficult in the heat so the last thing we want to do is get exhaustion.

“It’s important they work as hard as they can but we have to be careful with how much we exert them.”

New signing George Williams is due to return from winning a silver medal with Great Britain at the World University Games in Russia today and could be involved.

There will also be several other trialists on display as well as further opportunities for new recruits, left-sided attacker George Washbourne and midfielder Ashley Sammons.

Nuneaton, who finished 15th in their debut season in non-league’s top-flight, have played two friendlies so far, losing 4-1 to Coventry City and drawing 0-0 with Burton Albion, both at home.

Worcester’s last meeting against Kevin Wilkin’s side was a 3-0 defeat at Liberty Way in April 2012 when both were pushing for the Conference North play-offs.
