England ‘C’ call-ups latest for Harriers
8:00am Saturday 31st August 2013 in Sport By Steve Carley - Midlands Sports Journalist of the Year 2013, @stevecarleyWN
KIDDERMINSTER Harriers and the England ‘C’ squad seem to have gone hand-in-hand in recent times.
Centre-half Chey Dunkley has been called into the under 23s set-up this week, while Harriers left-back Mickey Demetriou is on standby for the friendly in Latvia on Tuesday, September 10.
They are the latest in a raft of Harriers players to get the nod from manager Paul Fairclough, including striker Anthony Malbon and former players Jamille Matt and James Vincent.
With Kidderminster manager Steve Burr being assistant to Fairclough for the national side, it might be seen as an advantage when it comes to selection but the players have earned their places on merit.
The quintet were all part of last season’s squad who were eventually pipped to the Conference Premier title by Mansfield.
Burr says 21-year-old Dunkley’s call-up this time is just reward for his performances since joining the club from Hednesford Town 12 months ago.
He said: “Chey has done very well and been close before on a number of occasions but we felt this time it was a chance for him.
“I know all about him and have been pushing his case and now Paul wants to have a look at him.
“Mickey has done well before and I am sure he will be involved in the future but it’s nice to see the lads getting the recognition they deserve.”
Harriers host Luton Town today (3pm) when former Charlton striker Paul Benson is in line to make his debut for the visitors.
Meanwhile, Aggborough will host the Under 16s Victory Shield match between England and Wales on Friday, October 4.
