Wolves’ Creekmore and Taylor in BBL team of the week
8:30am Wednesday 4th December 2013 in Sport
WORCESTER Wolves consolidated their position at the top of the British Basketball League with a high-scoring win at home to the Manchester Giants and an impressive victory on the road at Durham Wildcats.
Those performances have been recognised by two of their stars, centre Will Creekmore and point guard Zaire Taylor, being named in the latest BBL Team of the Week.
Creekmore had a big impact in the 118-102 slaying of the Giants, tallying 30 points and 14 rebounds, and just two days later against Durham he demonstrated his tamina when muscling aside his opponents for an equally fine haul of 32 points and 15 rebounds.
Trying to slow Creekmore’s power with fouls had little effect as he proceeded to slot home 15 of 16 shots from the free-throw line.
Worcester’s director of basketball Paul James said: “What can I say? Will is rock-solid, both mentally and physically. It’s no secret that we look to create situations where we can get the ball to him inside, but he’s the one who still has to finish the play. Week in, and week out he delivers.”
Taylor had a solid 16-point performance in the 100-86 win in Durham, but it was his sharpshooting against Manchester that really caught the eye.
He astonished spectators at the University Arena by floating home seven three-point baskets after only 15 minutes of the match, making eight from nine attempts in the game as a whole. In addition, he served up eight assists to his team-mates and stole the ball off Giants attackers on four occasions.
James was thrilled by Taylor’s 37-point display, and by his accuracy from distance, commenting: “Zaire is undoubtedly a very talented player. Not only did he hit a barrage of threes, but most of them were from way behind the three-point line.
“Every now and again players can have nights when they are on fire. Friday was one of those nights for Zaire.”
n Wolves have announced that the postponed home game against Surrey United on November 15 has been rearranged for Friday, December 13 at the University Arena (7.30pm). While the non-appearace of Surrey last month was beyond Wolves control, many fans were given refunds or tickets for future games, and the club are keen to show further goodwill by offering all supporters the discounted rate of £5 for the rearranged game. Wolves chairman Roger Clarke said: “The attitude of the fans on the night of the postponed game, and since against Manchester Giants, has been fantastic.”
Further details of the special offer will be on the club’s website in the next few days.
