Harriers seeking place in third round of FA Cup

Worcester News: Harriers seeking place in third round of FA Cup Harriers seeking place in third round of FA Cup

THE chance of meeting a Premier League giant is the incentive for Kidderminster Harriers as they prepare to do FA Cup battle against Newport County tomorrow (3pm).

Aggborough plays host to the second round clash which pits the Skrill Premier promotion-chasers against League Two high-fliers County, who won the Conference play-offs last season.

With both sides going well in their respective divisions, an enthralling contest, which should attract a bumper crowd, is on the cards.

Add in the small matter of £27,000 for the winners and the possibility of drawing the likes of Arsenal or Manchester United in the next round, and the stage is set.

Harriers manager Steve Burr, whose side will also bank £6,750 from extended highlights on ITV, said: “This is a massive game for both teams because the prize for the winners is a chance to play one of the teams at the top.

“We wanted Sheffield United in this round but if we win tomorrow there’s a chance we could be playing the likes of Manchester United.”

Harriers have won their last four matches against Newport, including 3-2 last season, in which Jamille Matt bagged a hat-trick, and by the same score the campaign before, featuring a Nick Wright treble.

“Our record against Newport at home has been very good,” Burr said. “Gary Whild and I have watched them a lot and they are stronger than last season.

“They’ve proved that teams from the Conference Premier can do well in the Football League.

“This is the FA Cup and with our incredible support and a bit of magic we can achieve our dreams. We’re all looking forward to it and we’re going to do our best to win.”

Harriers are expected to welcome back striker Amari Morgan-Smith, midfielders Lee Fowler, Kyle Storer and Danny Jackman and centre-half Josh Gowling after they sat out last Saturday’s FA Trophy 2-1 defeat at Bradford Park Avenue.
