Warriors v Biarritz
This live event has finished
- WELCOME to Sixways for tonight's Amlin Challenge Cup clash between Worcester Warriors and Biarritz (7.45pm).
- Red tape has slightly hampered Dean Ryan's team selection for this Pool One contest, but he has still fielded a strong side.
Well, that was a depressingly familiar ending to a Warriors match.
Oh well, keep plugging away, I guess.
Thanks for following tonight.
TRY Biarritz! With 21 seconds left on the clock, the visitors launch one more attack and generate numbers out wide on the right. Number eight Ueleni Fono goes through a gap and has the power to crash over and break Worcester hearts.
Peyrelongue misses the conversion with the final kick of the game.
Warriors 15-19 Biarritz
Another back row injury for Warriors as Sam Betty is helped off the field.
A nice left-to-right fade from the full-back slides the ball through the posts and Warriors lead again.
Warriors 15-14 Biarritz
Chance for Warriors to re-take the lead as Pennell lines up the posts.
Biarritz have a try chalked off for a forward pass after a flowing counter-attack from deep.
TRY Biarritz! An odd score there as the ball pops free somehow and visiting replacement scrum-half Yann Lesourgues pounced on the ball, rounded Pennell and touched down. Peyrelongue added the conversion to put his side ahead for the first time.
Warriors 12-14 Biarritz
“@tomguestWN: Highlight of the game so far - @CarsonWishart just sat on his pie.” Sums up Worcester rugby!!— @ojsamo 05 December 2013
Still pretty scrappy and not a great deal to report, I'm afraid!
Warriors butcher a great try-scoring chance and Biarritz manage to scramble clear.
Dean Hammond is looking very lively tonight. Certainly not the finished article, but an exciting prospect.
Warriors probe again, but can't break through, but the referee pulls play back for a penalty and also sends loosehead Fabian Barcella to the bin.
Penalty Warriors on half-way as Biarritz try in vain to snatch the ball, but go over the top. Pennell launches it to touch on the 22 in front of the Slick Stand.
Fainga'anuku is back on now, so RDC returns too.
Superb break from Jeremy Su'a through a tiny gap and he puts in a good fend too, but the ball just goes loose.
First scrum of the second-half, so Richard de Carpentier makes way for George Porter to ensure Worcester have sufficient front-rowers on the field.
The players are back out and Paul Warwick gets us back under way. Worcester still down to 14.
Warriors look to probe down the flanks, but they are hit for sealing off and there goes the half-time whistle.
Warriors 12-7 Biarritz
Inside the final minute of the half and Warriors have a line-out in the Biarritz 22 after the hosts were penalised on their own throw.
TRY Biarritz! Warriors' six-man pack do well to hold up the catch-and-drive from the penalty that followed Fainga'anuku's yellow card, but there's too much space out wide and Taku Ngwenya coasts in round the blindside.
Fly-half and captain Julien Peyrelongue adds the extras.
Warriors 12-7 Biarritz
Ofa Fainga'anuku is yellow-carded for a cynical pull-back on the Biarritz winger as the visitors surged forward.
Pennell beautifully steps his man as he fakes to kick, but he is then absolutely levelled by a crunching Ngwenya tackle.
With the most difficult kick of his three so far, pennell finds a superb conversion from out wide.
Warriors 12-0 Biarritz
TRY Warriors! Jeremy Su'a goes for the line from the scrum, but is stopped short. However, the ball soon goes wide left and Warriors have a big overlap. Josh Matavesi finds Alex Grove and the centre is awarded the try after a brief check with the TMO.
This game has come to life at last!
Biarritz knock-on at the scrum though, so Warriors have the put in 15 metres out, bang in front of the sticks.
Line-out five metres inside the Biarritz half after a Pennell penalty to touch and Warriors shred the visitors' defence again.
Alex Grove bursts onto Warwick's pass and sets up Pennell with a run to the line, but he cuts inside, slips and his pass goes to ground and forward. Big chance that.
TRY Warriors! The hosts get it right this time as Jonathan Thomas takes the ball quickly off the top of a line-out for Paul Warwick to find Dean Hammond on the outside break. The winger spurns a two-on-one, but is able to burst through the tackle and touch down. Fine score by the hosts.
Pennell fires the conversion wide right this time though.
Warriors 5-0 Biarritz
Warriors go through countless phases in the Biarritz 22, but they are unable to find any semblence of cutting edge and the move breaks down as Matavesi kicks the ball away.
Over 20 minutes gone and nothing to write home about so far. Warriors have kicked a penbalty to touch, so let's see if they can make something happen from this.
Absolutely dire game so far.
The full-back pulls the ball wide left of the target.
Still Warriors 0-0 Biarritz
....but Warriors lose the line-out.
However, they then win a penalty within range and, interestingly, Pennell takes up the kicking duties.
Chris Pennell uses his booming right boot to dispatch a penalty to touch inside the Biarritz 10m line.
The referee finally gives a decision Worcester's way - a Biarritz line-out not straight - and it is greeted by ironic cheers from the home fans.
Another shocker from Ngwenya, who completely misses Warwick's long bomb and it bounces behind him and out for a line-out.
Terrible officiating there by Ireland's Dudley Phillips as Taku Ngwenya blatantly spills Paul Warwick's up-and-under forward, but the official says it went backwards and then penalises Warriors at the breakdown.
First box-kick from Jeremy Su'a is a poor one as it goes out on the full to hand Biarritz a line-out just outside the Warriors 22.
Solid maul defence from Warriors early on as they hold up the Biarritz drive and win the put-in.
Biarritz get the game under way, attacking the North Stand end.
The Warriors are out on the pitch and they will need, ideally, a try bonus point win tonight to keep their interest in this competition alive.
Pool One leaders Sale Sharks are away in Oyonnax, where Warriors drew, tonight.
I admire your faith in the side...
