Defensive crisis hampering City

WORCESTER City are facing a potential defensive dilemma ahead of Saturday’s FA Trophy trip to Aldershot.

The Blue and Whites have seen their options at centre-half limited through injury and suspension and have not ruled out drafting in cover for the second round clash.

Skipper Graham Hutchison went off in the 2-0 defeat to Oxford City with an ankle injury following a strong challenge but is expected to be fit.

However, Shabir Khan serves the second of a two-game ban, Richard Munday is still struggling with a hamstring problem and Sam Smith is sidelined with a knee injury.

Manager Carl Heeley said: “Rich had come back from a hamstring injury and has been on the bench but he felt it again in the warm-up at Telford and has had to come back out.

“Sam has been suffering with a bit of fluid around the knee joint after his operation. It keeps swelling back up which is a major concern.

“When you throw in Shabir Khan’s suspension, we’re lacking cover, hence Ellis Deeney having to drop into the back four against Oxford.

“We need our players fit and available to us because we’ve got lots of games coming up and we can’t afford to start stretching the squad. I think we’re starting to look a bit threadbare.

“We do have a budget to stick to so we’ll have to see what we can do.”

Meanwhile, City have rearranged two matches for next month against Telford United and Altrincham.

They will host Telford on Tuesday, January 7, and visit the Robins on Tuesday, January 21. Both games were moved because of cup commitments.

Loan deals have two sides to them, and Worcester have given Matt Regan an opportunity for game time and to allow him to gain match fitness, to the longer-term benefit of Tamworth. Given that Matt himself was not available for two games during his one month loan spell, due to sciatic nerve issues, hopefully Carl will be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat and successfully negotiate a loan extension with Tamworth - even if just for another week, as anyway Matt would be ineligible to turn out for Tamworth this weekend in their FA Trophy game.
