A STRONG Biarritz side pipped Worcester Warriors tonight with a late second-half display to earn victory in round four of the Amlin Challenge Cup.

Warriors got off to a flier when Jeremy Su’a scored a try after 19 seconds but the hosts soon replied.

Yann Lesgourgues scored a brace of tries despite Ignacio Mieres kicking two penalties to give Warriors a half-time lead.

A red card for Thomas Synaeghel allowed Warriors to surge forward and Max Stelling and Paul Warwick both crossed the whitewash.

But two tries for Teddy Thomas and successful kicking from Benoit Baby in the final stages secured victory for the hosts.

Warriors arrived in Biarritz just a few hours before kick-off after heavy fog cancelled their flight from London Heathrow on Wednesday.

Alternative arrangements forced the starting 15 to fly from Bristol airport to Toulouse on yesterday morning and the remainder flew from London Stansted in order to get to Biarritz.

After just 19 seconds, Warriors got off to a flier when Su’a charged down a Julien Peyrelongue kick close to the Biarritz tryline and the Samoan chased down the ball to score. Mieres converted well to give the visitors a fantastic start.

But the hosts soon levelled when Lesgourgues picked up a loose ball and scored in the right corner with Peyrelongue adding the extras.

However, the Argentine made amends with his next penalty from near the halfway line, dissecting the posts with a superb kick.

Mieres then extended the Sixways side’s lead with a kick.

Biarritz soon piled into their opponents’ half but solid defending saw Warriors win a penalty and Synaeghel was sent to the sin-bin.

The hosts soon crashed over the tryline with scrum-half Lesgourgues getting his second try of the evening.

Immediately in the second period, Lesgourgues produced a superb chip-and-chase and almost reached the try-line but the hosts went ahead with a simple kick for Peyrelongue.

Warriors then produced a stunning break which saw Howard race down the right wing before off-loading to Stelling who touched down beneath the posts.

Synaeghel was shown the red card by Neil Hennessy. Warriors continued to press and Mieres stormed through the Biarritz backline before switching to Warwick who dived over in the right corner. Mieres narrowly missed the conversion.

But a quick spell of pressure from the hosts saw Baby kick a penalty before a loose ball was kicked forward for the rapid Thomas to score.

Baby converted to level the scores and Thomas grabbed the hosts’ fourth of the night. Baby secured victory with a late penalty.
