Mariners hit back to sink slack Harriers
4:44pm Friday 20th December 2013 in Sport
KIDDERMINSTER Harriers suffered a third successive Skrill Premier defeat as Grimsby Town overtook them in the table with a 3-1 victory.
Steve Burr's side matched their promotion rivals at Blundell Park in general play but paid the price for sloppy defending and a lack of cutting edge.
Michael Gash's early effort sparked hopes of Harriers continuing their excellent recent record against Town but a brace for Scott Neilson and one for Craig Disley shot them down.
With Amari Morgan-Smith and Callum Gittings suspended, right-back Lee Vaug-han returned from a ban and Anthony Malbon stepped into the empty striker's spot.
Forward Gash's eighth-minute shot took a wicked deflection off defender Shaun Pearson into the top corner to give Harriers the lead.
But Grimsby upped the pressure with a series of set-pieces and equalised in the 17th minute from a well-worked throw-in.
Centre-half Clayton Mc-Donald flicked the ball on and midfielder Disley fired a close-range effort past helpless keeper Danny Lewis.
Harriers went 2-1 down on the half-hour mark when they failed to clear and winger Neilson bent a fine 20-yard effort into the bottom corner and Neilson lobbed home his second goal in the 63rd minute with the Harriers defence and keeper Lewis slow to react.
Kidderminster's home fixture with Dartford has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 21, at 7.45pm.
Harriers: Lewis; L Vaughan, Gowling, Dunkley, Demetriou; Storer, Fowler, Jackman; Lolley, Gash, Malbon (Dance 76). Subs not used: Tolley, Blissett, N Vaughan, Riis.
