Busy month will test Worcester City strength

WORCESTER City’s squad is set to be stretched to its limit by a congested fixture schedule over the next few weeks.

Between today, when Harrogate Town visit Aggborough (3pm), and the trip to Vauxhall Motors on January 25, the Blue and Whites are due to play 10 matches in Skrill North.

That takes in the traditional busy Christmas and new year period along with mid-week matches as City catch up with games postponed due to their cup commitments.

Although injuries are currently few, with skipper Graham Hutchison and George Williams both expected to be back today, Worcester are poised to see players leave during the next month.

Winger Niall Thompson’s three-month loan from Torquay United ends following next Saturday’s match against Gloucester, while centre-half Matt Regan is in the second of his two-month stay from Tamworth.

Manager Carl Heeley could look to extend Regan’s loan into a third month but he would have to wait until the transfer window opens if he wanted to try and keep Thompson until the end of the season.

Striker Dominic Dell, on loan from League Two side Port Vale, is another due to return to his parent club in the near future.

In addition, fellow goal-getters Danny Glover and Daniel Nti are a booking away from picking up a one-game ban for five yellow cards.

City have already used 35 players this term and that number could well increase as Heeley guards against being short of personnel during the hectic schedule.

Asked if he was looking to recruit, he said: “You can’t have enough players. Nothing is planned but I wouldn’t rule it out. There is a lot of football coming up at this time of the year and, with things like viruses and sickness bugs, it is a recipe for players to be missing.”
