FOUR of Worcester Athletic Club’s veteran ladies' team have secured selection for the Welsh Masters outfit.

They qualified after a successful Welsh Masters Championships at Cardiff’s National Indoor Athletic Centre.

Anna Little secured triple gold, winning the 60 metres, 200m and 400m in the women's over 35s category races with each in a personal best time.

Her feat was close to being repeated by club-mate Pam Murray in the over 45s section with first places in the 60m and 400m.

But a 200m disqualification, when she stumbled out of her starting blocks on the steeply banked indoor track, prevented a second Worcester hat-trick of golds.

Worcester stalwart Mel Garland came home with the greatest medal count with four golds and one silver in the over 50s age group.

Garland won both the long and triple jump competitions, the latter in a lifetime best.

To round off a busy day, she also claimed further victories in the high jump and 60m sprint as well as a second place in the shot put.

Iris Holder, in the 70-74 age category, also returned with a hatful of Welsh golds, winning the 60m and both the long and triple jump.

All four athletes were selected to represent Wales in the GB Inter Area competition at London’s Lee Valley Stadium this weekend.

Some may soon be performing on an even bigger stage as Great Britain squad members at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest next month.
