Saturday county football league plans put on hold

PLANS for a new Saturday amateur football league in Worcestershire have been shelved due to lack of interest.

Worcestershire FA had hoped to kick-off a new competition this summer in order to breathe new life into the Saturday game and tempt teams back from the Midland Combination and West Midlands League.

But, despite positive feedback when a meeting was held earlier this year, not enough clubs have come forward in support.

Saturday divisions in the McDonald's Worcester and District League and Kidderminster and District League, which could have amalgamated into the new set-up, will continue into the 2014-15 campaign.

Worcestershire FA development manager Andy Norman said: "We just didn't have enough teams show interest so we have had to put it on hold.

"It was considered best to leave it as it is but we will be revisiting it. We will be looking at Saturday football in general and making it as attractive as possible."

Meanwhile, Worcester City Council pitches at Northwick Lodge and Diglis will be available for Worcester League matches this weekend as the waterlogging begins to ease.

However, Cornmeadow Lane, Brickfields, Pitchcroft, Perdiswell and Shap Drive continue to be out of action.
