WHAT a mess Kidderminster Harriers have got themselves into.

In the space of a few months they have gone from title challengers to 10th in the Skrill Premier, and are showing few signs of salvaging the situation.

They changed managers, having replaced Steve Burr with Andy Thorn, and, following the resignation of Mark Serrell at the weekend, now have a new chairman in Ken Rae.

On the face it, a club that seemed to have everything going for it has become a shadow of its former self by pushing the self-destruct button in quite spectacular fashion.

While results under Burr had taken a bit of a nosedive, his sacking at the start of January ahead of an FA Cup third round replay still came out of the blue.

The reasoning at the time was a need to push for the Football League and, according to Serrell and his board, Burr was not the man to achieve it.

In appointing Thorn, a huge gamble was taken and, although he has only been in the job less than two months, the move seems to have seriously back-fired.

Results have not improved and the fans have turned, leading to Serrell's departure after Saturday's 2-2 draw against Braintree at Aggborough.

So, where has it all gone wrong? Well, Burr's dalliance with Forest Green Rovers in November would have done little for relations. Maybe in talking to a club lower down the table but with more resources, he felt Harriers didn't have the means to secure promotion.

But, ultimately, he opted to stay put, perhaps realising that the grass isn't always greener. Yet, that episode coincided with a poor run of form and Serrell replaced him with former Coventry boss Thorn.

In doing so, it appears Serrell misjudged the support Burr had in the stands and getting fans to accept a newcomer, seemingly appointed on a whim rather than a detailed recruitment process, was going to be a hard sell.

Continued speculation that Serrell was looking to sell-up following talks with former Swindon Town chairman Jed McCrory also damaged links with the support, sections of which have disgraced themselves by posting abusive messages about Serrell on social media websites.

In the end, those have led to Ken Rae replacing him as chairman.

Whether or not this is a good move to stabilise Harriers is a moot point because it seems the damage has already been done.
