NEWLY-crowned Worcester City player-of-the-season George Williams has been tipped for a career in the professional game by manager Carl Heeley.

Williams won the prize, voted for by the fans, at the club’s annual awards evening following City’s commanding 3-0 victory over Boston United on Saturday.

The 21-year-old right-back topped the poll ahead of captain Ellis Deeney, Graham Hutchison, Daniel Nti, Tyler Weir and Jose Veiga.

He was also named players’ player-of-the-season at the Sixways bash, which was attended by more than 150 people.

Heeley has been impressed with how Williams has adapted to the rigours of Skrill North after joining from Loughborough University last summer and believes he has a bright future.

The Worcester boss also said he was “very hopeful”

of keeping the player at Aggborough for next season.

Heeley said: “He’s a super lad, honest as the day is long and I think he’ll go and play higher. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t.

“He’s had a fabulous season and he’s got flexibility. He’s proved he can play at rightback, centre-half and in midfield.

“Winning players’ player shows you what a good lad he is because that’s prestigious and means as much if not more to win it from your colleagues in the changing rooms. I can’t speak highly enough of the lad.”

Williams was joined on the list of winners by 16-goal top-scorer Nti and defender Hutchison with the pair jointly being named young player-of-the-year.

Nti made the step up from the Midland Alliance along with Williams and Ebby Nel- By Steve Carley 01905-742275 sc@worcesternews.co.uk Twitter @stevecarleywn son-Addy last season and, together with Ethan Moore, has scored the bulk of Worcester’s goals this season.

Nti’s strike in the 2-1 victory at Altrincham in January was selected as the best goal.

Former Birmingham City centre-half Hutchison also arrived last summer following a successful loan spell during the previous campaign.

Nelson-Addy was named sponsors’ player-of-the-season, while captain Deeney was the recipient of the management and staff players’ award.

Heeley added: “All of the young lads have been a pleasure to work with, they have been brilliant and I’m proud of every one of them. They deserve their accolades.”

Elsewhere, Jane and Norman Clarke were named clubmen of the year for their work on the public address system and behind the scenes.

Director Rich Widdowson won the supporter-of-theyear for his efforts travelling to away games and producing match highlights for the club’s website. A special award was also presented to physio Lawson Mayor in recognition of his efforts both at matches and in training.

Saturday’s win saw City finish 15th the table on 50 points, ensuring they ended the season on a high.

Williams was deployed in midfield alongside Nelson- Addy with skipper Deeney protecting the back four in a holding role. Centre-half Hutchison was switched to right-back, while Aaron Brown partnered Wayne Thomas in the heart of the defence.

Heeley explained: “Aaron is a natural centre-half so we wanted to have a look at him there.

“We know Hutch can play right-back but we wanted to have a look at George in the middle of the park because between him, Ellis and Ebby, there’s a lot of energy.

“It’s something we’ve toyed with doing a number of times but this was the ideal opportunity and he’s another who’s very versatile.”
